About

Coronado Coffee Company is built on community, consistency, and genuine connection, values that founders Luis Madrid and Esteban Benitez share at their core.

Luis Madrid’s journey with coffee began long before ownership. At just 17 years old, he was pushing a coffee cart before sunrise and back again at closing, helping support his family for a few dollars a day. What started as a job quickly became a calling. Over the next 33 years, Luis worked his way through every level of the coffee and hospitality industry, eventually purchasing his first café at just 20 years old using savings he kept in a shoebox. That early leap of faith set the tone for a career rooted in hard work, humility, and people first service.

In 2001, Luis joined the restaurant group that owned Coronado Coffee Company, later purchasing the business on March 16, 2020, the very first day of the COVID shutdown. At a moment when uncertainty was at its peak, Luis stepped in as an owner-operator, determined to protect the shop’s heart and continue serving the community he had grown up in.

Esteban entered the picture years later, bringing a shared passion for hospitality, creativity, and growth. The two quickly discovered they thought alike, balancing each other’s strengths and weaknesses while staying grounded in the same philosophy. Together, they focus on doing their best every day, never chasing trends or claiming perfection, but instead pouring care into every cup and every interaction.

Coronado Coffee Company has become known for its hometown feel, exceptional customer service, and loyal community. Luis often describes the shop as a “happy dysfunctional family,” a place where regulars are greeted by name, orders are remembered, and mornings start on a positive note.

The expansion into Point Loma felt natural. Much like Coronado, Point Loma is rich in history, family, and community pride. After countless challenges and moments that seemed to point them there, the neighborhood ultimately chose them. Their goal is simple: to become part of the fabric of Point Loma just as they have in Coronado, creating a space that feels familiar, welcoming, and deeply local from day one.

At its heart, Coronado Coffee Company is not about being the biggest or expanding the fastest. It is about staying local, building real relationships, and creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and at home.
